Top 5 ways to surf web anonymously

So you’re at work or school and you want to check your profile or watch a YouTube video. Lo and behold, it’s blocked. Now you have two options – be productive or try and bypass the filter. Usually one would choose the latter, but how would you do that? Here’s some options.

XeroBank

bypass blocked sites
The xB Browser is a whole web browser based on FireFox portable. It routes you via the Tor network. The down side? The Tor Network can be a bit slow and unreliable, but for the most part it looks and works just like a regular FireFox portable installation. It deletes all traces after exit. XeroBank also offers a monthly plan for their private, faster network.
We covered XeroBank in more detail here.  [Windows]

UltraSurf

proxy bypassThis has recently become my favorite software tool for bypassing blocked web sites.UltraSurf is seriously one of the best tools for the job. There is no install, so download the “exe” file onto a USB drive and run it whenever you need it.
When you open it up, it will open Internet Explorer with the UltraSurf homepage. From there the web is your oyster.
But why do I like it so much? First of all, it’s fast, it routes you through a possible three servers so you get highly reliable speeds. Second, it uses IE which is what you have if you’re on IT lockdown, so it doesn’t look suspicious and you don’t need to have two different browsers open at the same time. Also, since it uses your existing browser, things like Flash and Java will work like normal. Once you close UltraSurf it will erase your history and cookies. [Windows]

Remote Access

I ll soon write about remote access earlier, but it also works great for bypassing blocked sites. Simply log on to your home computer with LogMeIn’s Java viewer or whatever else you use and browse the internet from your own computer! It might lag a bit, but it works great! You can also use any software on your computer, too.

WebToMail

This one is interesting. If you have access to email, you have access to WebToMail. Just send an email to send@webtomail.co.cc with the URL as the subject and wait a few minutes and you’ll get an email with the web page. Unfortunately, it won’t work with sites that you need to login to, or websites with Flash or Java, but works with most other pages.

Bypass Firewalls using Proxies

There are literally thousands of proxy sites on the web. There are also sits that list proxy servers. Fact: 99.9% of them are blocked and the rest are going to be blocked by any decent filtering software. So you can host your own proxy with software like Glype proxy but for the most part they really don’t work too well.
These are some of the best ways to bypass websites that have been censored or blocked.

How to Detect Anonymous IP Adress?

As the fraudsters are now becoming more sophisticated in bypassing the Geo-location controls by using proxies (Anonymous IPs) to spoof their IP address, it has become very much necessary to come up with a means for detecting the proxies so that the authenticity of the users can be verified. Using a proxy (web proxy) is the simplest and easiest way to conceal the IP address of an Internet user and maintain the online privacy. However proxies are more widely used by online fraudsters to engage in cyber crimes since it is the easiest way to hide their actual Geo-location such as city/country through a spoofed IP address. Following are some of the examples where fraudsters use the proxies to hide their actual IP.

1. Credit Card Frauds
For example, say a Nigerian fraudster tries to purchase goods online with a stolen credit card for which the billing address is associated with New York. Most credit card merchants use Geo-location to block orders from countries like Nigeria and other high risk countries. So in order to bypass this restriction the credit card fraudster uses a proxy to spoof his IP address so that it appears to have come from New York. The IP address location appears to be legitimate since it is in the same city as the billing address. A proxy check would be needed to flag this order.

2. Bypass Website Country Restrictions
Some website services are restricted to users form only a selected list of countries. For example, a paid survey may be restricted only to countries like United States and Canada. So a user from say China may use a proxy so as to make his IP appear to have come from U.S. so that he can earn from participating in the paid survey.
So in order to stop such online frauds, Proxy Detection has become a critical component. Today most companies, credit card merchants and websites that deal with e-commerce transactions make use of Proxy Detection Services like MaxMind and FraudLabs to detect the usage of proxy or spoofed IP from users participating online.
Proxy Detection web services allow instant detection of anonymous IP addresses. Even though the use of proxy address by users is not a direct indication of fraudulent behaviour, it can often indicate the intention of the user to hide his or her real IP. In fact, some of the most used ISPs like AOL and MSN are forms of proxies and are used by both good and bad consumers.

How Proxy Detection Works?
Proxy detection services often rely on IP addresses to determine whether or not the IP is a proxy. Merchants can obtain the IP address of the users from the HTTP header on the order that comes into their website. This IP address is sent to the proxy detecting service in real time to confirm it’s authenticity.
The proxy detection services on the other hand compare this IP against a known list of flagged IPs that belong to proxy services. If the IP is not on the list then it is authenticated and the confirmation is sent back to the merchant. Otherwise it is reported to be a suspected proxy. These proxy detection services work continuously to grab a list or range of IPs that are commonly used for proxy services. With this it is possible to tell whether or not a given IP address is a proxy or spoofed IP.

How to Tell Whether a given IP is Real or a Proxy?
There are a few free sites that help you determine whether or not a given IP is a proxy. You can use free services like WhatisMyIPAddress to detect proxy IPs. Just enter the suspected IP in the field and click on “Lookup IP Address” button to check the IP address. If it is a suspected proxy then you will see the results something as follows.

So for all those who think that they can escape by using a spoofed IP, this post is the answer. I hope this information helps. Pass your comments.

Figure 2: The Vidalia Control Panel
When launched, it will automatically attempt to connect to the Tor anonymity network. A progress bar will indicate the the status of the connection attempt.
Figure 3: Status while Tor is starting up
Note: Tor must complete several tasks successfully before it connects to the anonymity network. Your initial attempt will take considerably longer than future connections. This is because Tor takes some time to learn about the network and its features, then downloads necessary information onto your computer.
If the connection attempt is successful, the following screen will appear:
Figure 4: The Tor Status section - Tor is running
If for some reason the connection is unsuccessful, please refer to Section 4: Troubleshooting Tor.

Figure 8: The 'Are you using Tor?' Mozilla Firefox screen
Congratulations! Your web browser is connected to the Internet through Tor. Websites that are blocked in your country will now be accessible, and your online destinations will remain unknown to anyone who many be monitoring your Internet connection. You may also notice that some webpages, such as www.google.com, will occasionally assume that you are located in a different country. This is normal when using Tor.
If there is a problem with the Tor connection, you may see the following screen:
Figure 9: The Tor is not working screen
If you see this message, or if the webpage fails to display anything, please refer to section 4.0 Troubleshooting Tor.

Free Anonymous Surfing, Free Proxies

Anonymous surfing allows you to surf the web without leaving a trail of particulars about your browser, your computer system, your country, IP address, list of fonts installed on your computer (yes, websites can find that out from your browser too, if they want to), etc. This is usually done by entering the address (URL) of the site you wish to go to at the free anonymous surfing proxy site. The latter will then retrieve the page and present it to you. The site you visit will not receive any particulars about your system or your IP address because the proxy will not have transmitted such particulars to it.
If you are particularly concerned about privacy and anonymity while surfing, you should note that, when using most of thefree anonymous surfing facilities, the URLs you visit and the content of those pages are easily gleaned by others. If absolute privacy is your concern, you might want to explore a commercial solution such as Anonymizer Universal  which will encrypt all your traffic (including your URLs) in a Virtual Private Network (VPN) giving you privacy from people snooping your connection (say) when you're connected via wireless broadband, and even privacy from your ISP. (Incidentally, if you use Anonymizer, you might want to try the coupon code "TFC15OFF" (without the quotes) to get 15% off the usual price. The code only works with the above link.)
